69y · Male·disseminated urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (palliated), bilateral lung adenocarcinoma and severe emphysema

A 69-year-old man died in prison custody from disseminated urothelial carcinoma of the bladder, bilateral lung adenocarcinoma, and severe emphysema. He had a significant smoking history and prior asbestos exposure. His lung cancer was diagnosed in 2018 and treated with radiotherapy; bladder cancer was detected in August 2022 and managed with transurethral resection and palliative radiotherapy. Following deterioration in December 2022 with metastatic disease, he received palliative care and died in hospital. The coroner found adequate medical treatment was provided during incarceration. There were no identified deficiencies in healthcare delivery or preventable factors contributing to his death.
