Inquest into the Death of Child MML

Child MML was an Aboriginal boy born in April 2010 who suffered catastrophic abusive head trauma at eight months old in December 2010, causing severe lifelong neurological impairment including cerebral palsy, uncontrolled seizures, and blindness. The cause of the initial injury remains unknown. He was placed in the care of his devoted paternal grandmother through the Department of Communities, who provided exemplary 24-hour care. He died at age 11 from bronchopneumonia and bowel perforation, natural consequences of his severe disability. The coroner found the care provided by his grandmother and Department exemplary. Minor communication issues between the Department and health service regarding end-of-life care planning were identified but did not result in clinical harm. No recommendations were made as organizations were already improving coordination.
