Inquest into the death of Robert Bell-Williams

Robert Bell-Williams, aged 71, died from metastatic papillary renal cell carcinoma while in lawful custody at Long Bay Hospital on 1 February 2024. Imprisoned since 2012, he was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma in 2020 with metastases to lungs, liver, and later brain. He underwent nephrectomy and received targeted therapy with Cabozantinib but developed significant cardiotoxicity. By late 2023, he was placed on palliative care with documented comfort-focused goals. He completed an Advanced Care Directive requesting no resuscitation or intensive interventions. In January 2024, he chose to return to Long Bay Hospital for end-of-life care under Dr S.'s care. The coroner found Robert received appropriate, coordinated medical care throughout his illness, his end-of-life wishes were respected, and his death resulted from natural causes. No care or treatment concerns were identified.
