Inquest into the death of Anthony Sampieri

Anthony Sampieri, 57-year-old inmate with end-stage hepatocellular carcinoma secondary to hepatitis C and cirrhosis, died at Prince of Wales Hospital Correctional Annex after 10 days of palliative care. He had received appropriate oncological treatment including chemoembolism before transfer to palliative care. The coroner found his death medically expected and his medical care while in custody appropriate. He died of natural causes whilst in lawful custody. The coroner noted no systemic failings or preventable aspects and made no recommendations, indicating this death was a natural consequence of advanced liver cancer in an appropriately managed patient.
