Inquest into the death of Mr Edward Curic aka Grahovac

Mr Edward Curic (49) died at Long Bay Correctional Complex on 21 May 2022 from diabetes mellitus and complications. He had poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes for 30 years with severe complications including bilateral amputations, Fournier's gangrene, and diabetic ketoacidosis. Recently diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer with six-month life expectancy, he was transferred to the Medical Sub Acute Unit for palliative care on 18 May 2022. Found unresponsive in his cell bathroom on 21 May with a superficial head injury, he died despite resuscitation attempts. The coroner found his medical care throughout incarceration was appropriate with no deficiencies, and made no recommendations for improvement. Key lessons include: appropriate chronic disease monitoring in custody occurred, patient non-compliance was documented, and terminal care was appropriately arranged. Death was from natural causes whilst lawfully incarcerated.
