Finding into death of Benjamin Goossens

Benjamin Goossens, a 54-year-old man in custodial supervision for a prior forensic mental health matter, died from glioblastoma at Austin Hospital following palliative care. He had a Grade 2 glioma identified in 2010 that progressed to Grade 4 glioblastoma by 2021, treated with debulking surgery. Disease progression continued with new lesions and functional decline through 2024. Transfer to palliative care in February 2025 was appropriate given his deterioration. The coroner found the death was expected, due to natural causes, and that medical care provided was appropriate. No preventable factors or clinical errors were identified.
