Joao De Ornelas, aged 76, disappeared at Tahune Airwalk, Geeveston on 3 March 2010 during a Portuguese community tour. He became disoriented and wandered off defined walking tracks into dense bushland. Despite comprehensive search efforts over five days involving over 200 personnel from multiple agencies, no trace was found. Medical expert opinion attributed his likely death to hypothermia, exhaustion and dehydration, exacerbated by early dementia, poor vision (blind in one eye), restricted left arm movement, and lack of protective clothing. Based on survivability analysis, death was estimated between 3–8 March 2010, with no realistic survival prospects by 8 March. The coroner declared him deceased but could not determine exact cause without body recovery. The case underscores the importance of staying on defined pathways in dense bushland and ensuring proper supervision of elderly persons with cognitive impairment at tourist sites.
