Inquest into the death of Michael MURPHY

Michael Murphy, aged 66, died in custody at Long Bay Correctional Centre from complications of chronic viral liver disease (hepatitis C-related cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma). He had a lengthy medical history and was in palliative care at the time of death. The coroner found no issues with his medical care or treatment. He received appropriate oncology review, underwent TACE procedures, and was managed with comfort measures including midazolam for symptom control. The death was natural and expected given his advanced liver disease and documented poor prognosis. No clinical or system failures were identified, and appropriate palliative care was provided.
