Shane Michael Kelly, a 65-year-old man with cerebral palsy living in specialist disability accommodation, died from aspiration pneumonia complicating urosepsis secondary to nephrolithiasis. He was admitted to hospital on 20 May 2024 after staff noted he appeared unwell, and was diagnosed with an infected kidney stone. Despite oxygen and intravenous antibiotics, his condition deteriorated over several days. He was transitioned to palliative care and died on 27 May 2024. The coroner found no preventability issues and noted that a delay in ambulance transport did not contribute to the death. The case highlights the known medical risks associated with his conditions and demonstrates appropriate end-of-life decision-making in consultation with family.
