Richard Kartinyeri died 44 days after exiting a moving vehicle during a police pursuit. He sustained a severe right-sided acute subdural haematoma, cerebral contusions and skull fractures requiring emergency neurosurgery. Post-operative complications including raised intracranial pressure requiring further craniotomy, temporal lobectomy, and later management in critical care led to ARDS, aspiration pneumonia and sepsis. The forensic pathologist confirmed appropriate and timely treatment. Clinical lessons include the inevitability of poor outcome given the severity of initial traumatic brain injury, despite optimal surgical and critical care management. The coroner found Senior Constable Fox's pursuit decision justified, though noted communication failures between officers regarding actual location/ETA affected decision-making about pursuit termination.
