Inquest into the death of Manuel Katsaros

Manuel Katsaros, aged 54, died from metastatic small cell lung cancer while in custody at Prince of Wales Hospital Annex receiving palliative care. The coroner found no systemic deficiencies or clinical errors. The patient had advanced cancer diagnosed in 2018 while imprisoned, received appropriate chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and made an informed decision to cease active treatment in favour of palliative care. His family expressed no concerns about the care provided. Resuscitation was appropriately withheld per his documented wishes. This case highlights the importance of continuing appropriate cancer care for incarcerated individuals and ensuring advance care planning is respected.
