William Boyles, aged 65, drowned after attempting to cross Edwards Bridge on his motorcycle during severe flooding on 27 January 2013. Despite road closures being in place and firefighters actively managing the flooded area, Mr Boyles attempted to traverse approximately 700mm of rapidly flowing floodwater. He was swept away during a rescue attempt and located deceased the following morning. Post-mortem examination revealed drowning as the primary cause, with significant pre-existing conditions including severe emphysema, coronary atherosclerosis, and cardiomegaly. The clinical lesson is that extreme weather warnings, road closures, and visible hazard management were inadequate to prevent this fatality. Public education about flood risks and the dangers of attempting to cross flooded waterways remains critical, particularly for vulnerable populations with underlying respiratory and cardiac disease.
