Seker Yildiz, aged 59, died from sharp force injuries to the neck inflicted by her husband, Mr Dursun Yildiz, using a small axe at their home in Dallas, Victoria. The perpetrator had undiagnosed mental illness characterised by delusional beliefs that his life was at risk and auditory hallucinations. No discernible history of family violence existed prior to the fatal incident. Two independent psychiatrists diagnosed Mr Yildiz with a schizophrenic or delusional disorder. Despite contact with general medical services and English language classes, his mental illness went unidentified. The case highlights the critical need for mental health screening in community settings, particularly among vulnerable populations with language barriers, and recognition that domestic homicides can occur without prior violence indicators when mental illness is present.
