Ms Leesa Sandra Higgins, a 51-year-old woman with tuberous sclerosis and intellectual disability living in residential care, died from complications of presumed gallbladder adenocarcinoma. She was admitted to hospital in February 2024 with fever and suspected intra-abdominal sepsis; imaging revealed retroperitoneal lymphadenopathy and a large mass consistent with cancer recurrence. Following assessment and family consultation, she was deemed unsuitable for further active treatment and transitioned to comfort care, dying 15 days later. The death was from natural causes with no evidence of preventable factors or clinical errors identified during investigation. No inquest was required.
