Mrs Alyson Margaret Mellor, aged 64, died from a head injury sustained in a single-vehicle motor accident on 30 April 2022. She had type 1 diabetes managed with an insulin pump, and on the day of the accident her husband reported she mentioned her insulin levels were dropping. The coroner could not definitively establish whether the accident was caused by a diabetic emergency (hyperglycaemia suggested by pump alarm and comments) or inattention/distraction, as post-mortem biochemical confirmation was not possible due to vitreous sample degradation. The coroner made no recommendations regarding medical care or practitioner conduct, suggesting no systemic failings in her diabetes management were identified. Her medical fitness to drive had been confirmed by her GP two months prior.
