Finding into death of Vasiliki Roussis

A 59-year-old woman with profound intellectual disability and cerebral palsy died in hospital from unascertained natural causes. She had been a state ward since infancy, living in a group home. On 2 July, staff noted lethargy, pallor, diarrhoea and dry retching. Medical advice was sought and conservative management advised with follow-up in 1-3 days. Her condition deteriorated the following morning; an ambulance was called and she was admitted to hospital. She was transferred to palliative care where she died later that day. An external examination revealed natural causes but the specific cause could not be determined. The Disability Services Commissioner found no adverse findings regarding care provided by the service provider.
