Billy John Martin, a 33-year-old man, drowned in a residential swimming pool while heavily intoxicated (blood alcohol 0.370%), having sustained recent head trauma. He had visited a doctor five days prior with post-concussion symptoms following blunt head trauma. On the day of death, after hours of drinking and swimming with friends, he became unconscious in the pool and drowned. The coroner found the death was accidental. Clinical lessons include the importance of assessing head trauma severity in intoxicated patients, recognising that alcohol intoxication itself is life-threatening and impairs cognition and judgment, and the risk of loss of consciousness in severely intoxicated individuals.
