Walter William Cowell (born 1923) and Joan Iris Jean Cowell (born 1925) disappeared in 1983 at an unknown location. Both had significant mental health histories: Walter had post-traumatic stress disorder and depression from WWII service; Joan showed signs of cognitive decline including forgetfulness. They became increasingly isolated, made minimal contact with family, and were engaged in itinerant fruit-picking work. Their pension payments went uncashed in 1983 and were discontinued. Despite extensive police investigation including national checks with financial institutions, health departments, and missing persons units over 30 years, no trace was found. The coroner found insufficient evidence to determine cause of death, rejecting the investigating officer's suicide theory while acknowledging it remained possible, alongside accidental death or foul play.
