Inquest into the disappearance and suspected death of Kenneth Klees

Kenneth Klees, aged 37, disappeared on 1 February 2021 and was found deceased on Mollymook beach on 26 February 2021. He had a history of depression, anxiety, poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In the weeks before his disappearance, his mental health appeared to deteriorate. He travelled alone to Kiama on the day he disappeared, was last seen on CCTV appearing disoriented near cliffs and ocean, and withdrew cash before disappearing. Only partial remains were recovered, preventing autopsy determination of cause. The coroner could not definitively establish whether death was by suicide or accidental fall, making an open finding. Clinical lessons include the importance of ensuring mental health care continuity, particularly during transitions, and aggressive management of chronic disease risk factors including diabetes control.
