Two women died in a motor vehicle collision on Tin Can Bay Road when a B-double truck driven by Paul O'Connor collided with their vehicle. The truck driver was not wearing a seatbelt; upon impact with a preceding vehicle, he was thrown around causing him to release the brakes, sending the truck into the path of the Daewoo driven by Laura Milner. Laura sustained fatal basal skull fractures with brainstem laceration. Samantha Yates sustained a transected thoracic aorta and base of skull fracture, both immediately fatal injuries. The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous operation causing death. The clinical lesson relates to trauma management principles: severe polytrauma from motor vehicle collisions can be immediately fatal despite best efforts. Road safety measures, including proper seatbelt use by all vehicle occupants, remain critical prevention strategies.
