Inquest into the death of Jose Manuel XAVIER

Jose Manuel Xavier, a 64-year-old prisoner, died from metastatic oesophageal carcinoma with a contributing Stanford B thoracic aortic dissection. He was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in July 2019 after presenting with dysphagia and nocturia in March 2019. An oesophageal stent was inserted at Dubbo Base Hospital, and he received palliative care at Long Bay Hospital MSU before transfer to the Secure Ward at Prince of Wales Hospital where he died on 9 September 2019. The coronial investigation found no evidence of inadequate care or missed opportunities for intervention. The coroner concluded no action by Corrective Services or Justice Health could have altered the outcome of this incurable malignancy. Medical management was appropriate throughout custody.
