A 48-year-old man died from a head injury sustained during a confrontation at a burgled fish and chip shop. He had broken into the shop early on 20 June 2022. A neighbour, hearing the break-in, confronted him with a cricket bat despite police being called. During the altercation, the neighbour struck the deceased multiple times with the bat, including blows to the head, causing a non-survivable brain injury. The coroner found the neighbour acted in self-defence when the deceased threatened him with a knife. The coroner noted that the neighbour should have waited for police rather than arming himself and confronting the intruder, as a more restrained approach would likely have prevented the death.
