Finding into death of John Harwood

John Harwood, a 65-year-old man with Down syndrome, died from aspiration pneumonia following hip prosthesis removal for infection. He experienced multiple aspiration episodes during attempts at nasogastric feeding after surgery in February 2011. The Health and Medical Investigation Team found medical management was of high standard, with appropriate palliative care referral and ethical decision-making regarding feeding options. No clinical errors or system failures were identified. The death resulted from the natural complications of his underlying condition and post-surgical feeding difficulties, managed appropriately throughout.
