Finding into death of Leigh James Carr Price

45-year-old man with mucopolysaccharidosis-III died from pneumonia following rapid deterioration over 48 hours. He presented with cold-like symptoms on 21 July; examined by locum doctor Dr B. who found normal vital signs and clear chest, diagnosed upper respiratory infection. Re-examined 22 July by locum Dr S. who found scattered crackles and presumed aspiration pneumonia, prescribed oral antibiotic suitable for home management given afebrile and haemodynamically stable status. Condition deteriorated overnight; admitted 23 July with productive cough, fever, dyspnoea requiring IV antibiotics and maximal oxygen. Despite adequate antibiotic coverage, respiratory distress progressed; comfort care initiated evening 23 July, death 24 July. Coroner found no causal connection between death and medical care provided. Clinical lesson: recognition of rapid progression in vulnerable populations with degenerative disease; threshold for hospital admission in severely immunocompromised individuals presenting with respiratory signs.
