Finding into death of David John Scott

David John Scott, a 51-year-old inmate at Port Phillip Prison, died from metastatic small cell lung cancer on 22 December 2013. He presented with chest pain in April 2013, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer, and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy with initial good response. However, his condition deteriorated with development of bony metastases and multiple organ involvement. In December 2013, he presented with acute pancreatitis and suspected chest infection, with declining renal function and general condition. The coroner found no relationship between his death and his custodial status, confirming death from natural causes. The case highlights the challenges of managing advanced malignancy in custodial settings and the importance of palliative care planning in progressive metastatic disease.
