John Joseph Moran, a 69-year-old man with a history of mental health problems including schizophreniform psychosis and organic delusional disorder following a stroke, disappeared in February 2006 while in a remote area of Western Australia. He had been found confused in October 2004, admitted to hospital, and diagnosed with psychosis. After discharge, he remained under follow-up but was erratic and prone to driving off without notice. In February 2006, while stranded in remote areas east of Perth following car damage, he made contact with police and family but subsequently disappeared. Despite exhaustive investigation over eight years, including monitoring financial accounts, pension records, and border crossings, no evidence of his whereabouts or survival emerged. The coroner found his death established beyond reasonable doubt but could not determine the cause, given his remote location, poor mental health, age, and medical history including prior stroke.
