George Platakis, a 54-year-old man with Huntington's Disease and COPD, died from Klebsiella pneumoniae pneumonia while residing in specialist disability accommodation. He had sustained a serious fall in January 2023 causing spinal fractures and rhabdomyolysis, after which he was discharged to supported accommodation due to his significant care needs and impaired swallowing. He experienced another fall on 12 November 2023 with facial injuries, and died 10 days later from respiratory distress. The coroner found no clinical management failures by care staff. The case highlights risks of aspiration and respiratory infection in patients with Huntington's Disease, progressive neurological decline affecting swallowing, and the importance of appropriate specialist accommodation and care protocols for preventing falls and managing dysphagia in this population.
