Rosemarie Paton, aged 68, died from intestinal pseudo-obstruction in the context of longstanding multiple sclerosis and immobility. She was a bed-bound resident of specialist disability accommodation requiring 24-hour nursing care. On 15 May 2023, she developed symptoms of intestinal pseudo-obstruction and was assessed by a doctor who appropriately determined that comfort care was the most suitable approach rather than active intervention. She deteriorated overnight and died the following afternoon surrounded by family. The coroner found no circumstances of concern regarding her care or treatment. This case highlights that pseudo-obstruction is a recognised complication of severe neurological disease and immobility; early recognition of this condition and appropriate palliative care decisions are important when active treatment is unlikely to be beneficial.
