Coroner's Finding: ANKER Paul Eugene

Paul Eugene Anker, a 53-year-old prisoner, died from metastatic rectal carcinoma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He had been appropriately diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016 whilst in custody and underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Despite initial treatment response, metastases developed in his lungs, liver, brain and spine. His care throughout his incarceration and final hospitalisation was well-managed with appropriate specialist input and palliative care. He was reviewed by multiple medical teams including medical oncology, radiation oncology and neurology. The coroner found his healthcare in custody was adequate and appropriate, with no issues identified in his clinical management. He died comfortably from disease progression.
