Finding into death of Jock Allan Adams

Jock Allan Adams, a 68-year-old man imprisoned at Port Phillip Prison with a history of diabetes, schizophrenia, early dementia and follicular lymphoma (treated with chemotherapy), was admitted to St Vincent's Hospital on 7 December 2007 with small bowel obstruction. He underwent laparotomy and ileocaecal resection on 27 December 2007. Postoperatively he refused food and fluids; IV therapy and nasogastric feeds were initiated. His condition deteriorated on 4-5 January 2008 with provisional diagnosis of pneumonia. A MET call was made at 11:20am on 5 January 2008 when further deterioration was observed. In accordance with his prior expressed wishes, no active treatment was implemented. He died at 11:20am. The coroner found no relationship between his death and his incarcerated status, and confirmed natural causes related to follicular lymphoma with pneumonia as the immediate cause.
