Dennis Petzler, a 59-year-old prisoner, died from carcinomatosis due to adenocarcinoma of the pancreas with extensive metastatic spread. He presented with abdominal pain and nausea in June 2018, initially managed as gastritis. A hospital referral on 2 July 2018 revealed advanced metastatic disease. Despite appropriate palliative care, he deteriorated rapidly and died three weeks later. Clinical experts found that pancreatic cancer diagnosis is often late, and earlier hospital referral would not have changed the outcome. The healthcare provided at the correctional centre and hospital met community standards. No clinical errors or preventable factors were identified.
