A 71-year-old experienced motor racing driver suffered fatal head and neck injuries when his Datsun collided with a stalled Lamborghini on the starting grid at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The driver of the stalled vehicle was initially obscured from view. Despite rapid emergency response and appropriate on-scene trauma care including intubation and resuscitation, the patient sustained catastrophic brainstem injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, and cranio-cervical dislocation. He remained deeply unconscious and life support was withdrawn. The coroner found that use of a frontal head restraint device (then not mandatory at state-level events) would likely have significantly reduced the risk of fatal injury. The coroner also found the hazard warning system at the circuit inadequate to alert drivers despite rapid flag deployment.
