Finding into death of David John Campbell

A 59-year-old man imprisoned at Hopkins Correctional Centre collapsed on 16 July 2019 with a left thalamic intracerebral haemorrhage with intraventricular rupture. He was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital where an external ventricular drain was inserted and he received intensive care management. Despite medical intervention, his neurological recovery was poor. After 48 hours of ceased sedation showed no improvement, discussions with family led to a decision for palliative care. He died 11 days later. The coroner found that custodial and healthcare management was appropriate and met required standards. No clinical errors or preventable factors were identified in the investigation.
