Coroner's Finding: DILETTOSO Giuseppe

Giuseppe Dilettoso, aged 79, died of aspiration pneumonia at a nursing home where he was detained under guardianship orders. He had suffered two significant head injuries (2000 and 2013), with the latter requiring emergency neurosurgery for skull fractures and subdural haematoma. Post-injury he developed dementia and dysphagia, requiring soft diet and thin fluids due to weak swallowing and inability to learn safety strategies. He was appropriately placed in nursing home care after failed rehabilitation. The coroner found no deficiencies in care at any facility (hospitals, rehabilitation centre, or nursing home) or by treating doctors. His death was expected and peacefully managed. The detention order was appropriate for his protection and did not contribute to his death.
