Stanley Allan Lord, a 39-year-old man, died from dilated cardiomyopathy while in custody at Prince of Wales Hospital. He had a long-standing cardiac history including prior myocardial infarction, presenting acutely with cholecystitis, acute kidney injury, and multi-organ failure. The coroner found he received appropriate standard healthcare equivalent to non-custodial care, with timely transfers to higher-level facilities and specialist cardiology input. Despite high-quality medical management by experienced clinicians, he suffered cardiac arrest during central line insertion and could not be revived. The coroner concluded the death resulted from combined chronic cardiac disease and acute multi-organ failure, with nothing reasonably preventable and the same outcome likely regardless of custody status.
