Inquest into the death of Kenneth Johnstone

Kenneth Johnstone, a 79-year-old prisoner with extensive comorbidities including metastatic colorectal cancer, diabetes, stage 4 chronic kidney disease, and osteomyelitis, died from cancer complications. He was appropriately placed in palliative care and received adequate pain management and end-of-life care within the prison hospital setting. The coroner found his final illness was managed with proper care, with observations maintained 15-30 minutes prior to death. This case illustrates appropriate management of advanced malignancy in a custodial setting and demonstrates that complex medical conditions in older patients with multiple comorbidities require coordinated palliative approaches.
