Inquest into the Death of Aaron GENOVESE

Aaron Genovese, 29, died after his motorcycle collided with a Toyota Prado at an intersection during a police pursuit. The collision caused a fracture dislocation of the upper cervical spine with complete spinal cord transection, fatal injuries that were immediately incapacitating. The coroner found the police pursuit was initiated appropriately for speeding and conducted in accordance with Emergency Driving Guidelines. Critically, both vehicles had come to an almost stationary position at the intersection when Genovese suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated into the path of the oncoming vehicle. The coroner determined police actions did not cause or contribute to the death. However, Genovese was under the influence of methylamphetamine, which impaired his judgment. The finding emphasises the heightened risks of motorcycle pursuits and recommends specific reference to these risks be added to police guidelines.
