Inquest into the death of Carmelo Disano

Carmelo Disano, a 71-year-old man serving a prison sentence, died from metastatic caecal adenocarcinoma with liver and lung metastases at Long Bay Hospital in November 2015. He was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in September 2014 and underwent palliative chemotherapy from October 2014. The coroner found no deficiencies in his care or treatment while in custody. Clinical and administrative steps were appropriately taken to manage his declining condition along a palliative care pathway. An advanced care directive was in place confirming he was not for resuscitation. His family was given increased bedside access in his final weeks. The coroner concluded that healthcare provided met expected standards and no act or omission by correctional or health services contributed to his death.
