Inquest into death of RODNEY WAYNE RUDD

A 67-year-old man with chronic pain, pancreatitis, osteoporosis and emphysema died from aspiration of gastric contents due to morphine toxicity. He had been prescribed opioid medications (MS-Contin and Ordine) by his GP under pain specialist guidance for over 15 years. Post-mortem toxicology showed therapeutic/toxic morphine levels. Investigation revealed Mr Rudd stockpiled medications, dispensing prescriptions at first opportunity rather than as needed. While he had been on higher opioid doses previously and was reportedly conscientious with medication use, the coroner found no adverse comment warranted against treating doctors. The GP prescribed monthly supplies and the pain specialist reviewed annually. No matter of public safety was found, and no recommendations were made.
