Coroner's Finding: SEERY Francis

63y · Male·raised intracranial pressure due to cerebellar metastasis arising from primary bronchogenic large cell carcinoma

Francis Seery, aged 63, died of raised intracranial pressure from cerebellar metastasis secondary to bronchogenic large cell carcinoma. Diagnosed with lung cancer in May 2001 while imprisoned, he received radiotherapy with initial good response. Symptoms recurred in March 2002; further radiotherapy in April 2002 was ineffective. He was transferred to Mary Potter Hospice on 26 September 2002 under a leave of absence order and died there on 22 October 2002. The coroner found the care provided was appropriate and sensitive, meeting community standards. No clinical errors or preventable factors were identified. The inquest proceeded due to the death occurring while the prisoner was serving a sentence, though he was no longer formally detained at the hospice.
