Peter Andrew Johnson, aged 61, died from paraneoplastic syndrome caused by metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in March 2007, undergoing right upper lobectomy in April 2007. Subsequent brain metastases developed in September 2007 requiring multiple surgical interventions. His mental state deteriorated due to advanced cancer, resulting in a 21-day Mental Health Act detention order. He was transferred to Flinders Medical Centre where he died on 14 September 2009. The coroner found he received appropriate medical care throughout his detention and made no recommendations. This inquest was held as required because the death occurred while subject to a mental health detention order.
