Anthony Kenneth Hansen, a 46-year-old inmate at Maryborough Correctional Centre, presented with flu-like symptoms on 24 August 2003 and was appropriately evaluated by visiting medical officers. Despite timely antibiotic therapy and supportive care, his condition rapidly deteriorated on 27 August with haemoptysis, hypoxia, and fever. He was transferred to Maryborough Base Hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with severe bilateral pneumonia. Despite intubation and mechanical ventilation, he developed Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome and died. An independent respiratory physician review confirmed all management decisions were appropriate and timely, with no preventable factors identified. The rapid, unpredictable deterioration in the context of severe pneumonia reflected the natural course of disease rather than any failure in clinical care.
