Barry John Hockey, a 58-year-old prisoner, died of advanced lung adenocarcinoma with metastatic disease and acute bronchopneumonia while in the Princess Alexandra Hospital Secure Unit. He presented in November 2007 with respiratory symptoms initially misdiagnosed as infection; chest imaging and pleural fluid analysis eventually confirmed lung cancer. He received appropriate multidisciplinary care including oncology review, chemotherapy, and palliative care. Independent medical review confirmed adequate medical treatment throughout his incarceration and hospital admissions. Autopsy revealed extensive lymphatic spread and secondary changes. Elevated oxycodone and paroxetine levels detected post-mortem were not considered to have contributed to death. The coroner found no deficiencies in medical care or preventable factors.
