George Iles, an 83-year-old prisoner, died from metastatic oesophageal adenocarcinoma. He had multiple comorbidities (asthma, hypertension, heart disease) and experienced falls and deterioration during incarceration. In 2009, he was diagnosed with oesophageal adenocarcinoma and a brain tumour. He was transferred to the prison hospital ward for palliative care in September 2009 and died in October 2009. The coroner found his management within normal parameters of reasonable healthcare practice. The case demonstrates appropriate end-of-life care provision in a custodial setting, with timely transfer to palliative care when curative treatment was no longer feasible due to age and poor health status.
