Finding into death of Wayne Paul Eadie

Wayne Eadie, a 47-year-old man with intellectual disability living in residential care, died from community-acquired pneumonia complicated by acute-on-chronic renal failure. He presented unwell on 3 February 2012 and was appropriately referred by his GP to Northern Hospital where bilateral severe pneumonia was diagnosed and treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. His condition deteriorated despite appropriate management. The coroner found no issues with his care and explicitly determined there was no relationship between his placement in custody/care and his death. This case illustrates that pneumonia remains a serious condition in vulnerable populations, particularly those with multiple comorbidities including renal failure.
