Anne Beeston, a 58-year-old woman with Down syndrome and end-stage Alzheimer's dementia, died from complications of her neurological conditions. She had been a ward of the state living in Department of Human Services residential housing for 10 years. Her health deteriorated following a fall in late December 2013, and despite appropriate medical management, she never fully recovered. She died peacefully in her bed with staff present. The coroner found her management by the Department was within reasonable health care practice standards, with no concerns identified regarding her clinical care or institutional oversight. No autopsy was deemed necessary.
