Coroner's Finding: Reed, Ian William McDonald

Ian William McDonald Reed, aged 44, died from an intracerebral haemorrhage caused by vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune thrombocytopenia (VIPIT) following AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination. He presented with a four-day headache approximately two weeks post-vaccination, then collapsed while on holiday. Despite emergency transfer to Royal Hobart Hospital and neurosurgical intervention, he died three days after admission. VIPIT is a rare but recognised complication of the AstraZeneca vaccine resulting from an abnormal immunological response. The coroner found the death was causally related to the vaccination. Autopsy findings were confirmed by multiple forensic and anatomical pathologists. The coroner determined that adequate information about vaccine side effects was available at the time and made no recommendations regarding public health communication.
