Lachlan O'Rourke, aged 42, died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head on 3 October 2012 at his home in Brisbane. He killed his ex-partner Elissa Burnett moments before taking his own life. The death followed the recent ending of their relationship, which O'Rourke attributed to his upcoming colostomy surgery but was also driven by jealousy and perceived slights. O'Rourke had a significant criminal history and family history of suicide. No alcohol or drugs (except non-toxic antihistamine) were detected.
