An 81-year-old man with multiple chronic conditions including dementia, ischaemic heart disease, emphysema, and hypertension sustained a fractured right femoral neck from a fall at an aged care facility. He underwent surgical repair but developed pneumonia post-operatively from a pre-existing chest infection. Despite treatment, his condition deteriorated and he died three days after surgery. The coroner found no systemic failures or recommendations for improvement. Clinically, this case illustrates the high mortality risk of hip fracture surgery in elderly patients with significant comorbidities and concurrent infections. Earlier recognition and aggressive management of the pre-existing chest infection might have altered the trajectory, though outcomes remain poor in this demographic.
