Inquest into the death of Donald GREENAWAY

Donald Victor Greenaway, an 88-year-old man serving a 21-year prison sentence, died from metastatic prostate carcinoma in the Aged Care Ward at Long Bay Correctional Centre. He had been diagnosed with stage IV prostate cancer in 2009 and received external beam radiotherapy. During his 6+ years in custody, his cancer re-emerged around 2017 with bony metastases detected on imaging. He subsequently received appropriate palliative care, hormone therapy, and radiation oncology treatment at Prince of Wales Hospital. By May 2020, his cancer had become castrate-resistant. The coroner found no evidence that the level of medical care provided by Corrective Services NSW and Justice Health staff was inadequate or contributed to his death. His clinical course and treatment were appropriately documented and managed.
